Who supplies your power in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's grid is served by several large investor-owned utilities: PECO around Philadelphia, PPL Electric Utilities across the central and north-east, Duquesne Light in the Pittsburgh area, and four FirstEnergy companies — Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power and West Penn Power — covering much of the rest of the state. Beyond these, a scattering of rural electric co-operatives and a handful of municipal systems serve smaller pockets. All the investor-owned utilities operate under the same statewide net-metering rules set by the Public Utility Commission, so your core export terms are broadly consistent regardless of which one bills you.

What you’re paid for what you export

Pennsylvania still runs genuine retail net metering, which is getting rare. Exports earn the same rate you pay, and unused credits roll forward month after month. The wrinkle arrives at the annual true-up, at the end of the metering year (typically late May): any credit balance still sitting on the account is cashed out at the utility's lower 'price-to-compare' generation rate rather than at retail. The sensible response is to size the array to your own annual consumption instead of banking a big surplus. Residential systems qualify up to 50 kW, and provided output stays roughly in line with yearly usage, the grid behaves close to a one-for-one battery across the seasons.

Pennsylvania incentives & taxes in 2026

Pennsylvania's own support is thinner than its neighbour New Jersey's. The main earner is the SREC market under the state's Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard: each megawatt-hour your roof produces mints one certificate, which utilities buy to meet their solar obligation. Since Pennsylvania closed the market to out-of-state systems in 2017, PA-sited SRECs have traded more firmly — though prices remain modest, on the order of tens of dollars per MWh, and they move with the market rather than being guaranteed. Beyond that, the list is short: no statewide rebate, no state income-tax credit, and no blanket property- or sales-tax exemption for solar.

What solar costs in Pennsylvania

Around $2.90 per watt is what most Pennsylvania homeowners end up paying, with quotes generally falling between $2.70 and $3.20 — no different from the country at large. On an 8 kW array that puts the bill in the low-to-mid $20,000s before incentives. Roof complexity, equipment choice and how many installers compete in your area all move the number, which is a good argument for collecting two or three itemised quotes.

The honest verdict for Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania in 2026 is solid rather than spectacular. Retail-rate net metering does real work at 20 cents/kWh, and the closed-border SREC market adds a modest, variable top-up — but with nothing left from Washington and no state tax breaks, the stack is far lighter than New Jersey's next door. A well-sized, owned system should break even in roughly 10 to 13 years, sooner if SREC prices firm up and your rates keep climbing. Worthwhile for plenty of households; just expect a longer road.
