Who supplies your power in New Hampshire

New Hampshire's grid is served mainly by three investor-owned utilities — Eversource (by far the largest, the former Public Service Company of New Hampshire), Liberty Utilities and Unitil — plus the member-owned New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC), which covers much of the rural north and centre of the state. All operate under the same net-metering framework set by the state Public Utilities Commission, so the export terms below apply broadly wherever you live. Both the energy and transmission components are credited at retail, credits carry forward month to month against the power you draw back, and systems up to 100 kW qualify, which covers every home installation going. Persistent long-run surpluses are trued up at a lower avoided-cost rate, so the framework rewards matching the array to your own consumption rather than heavily over-building. For most of the year, though, the grid functions as a roughly one-for-one battery — and at 25 cents a credited kilowatt-hour, that is worth a great deal. This is not California's NEM 3.0, and the difference shows up directly in the payback.

New Hampshire incentives & taxes in 2026

The support here is quieter than in the rest of the Northeast, but not zero. Start with what New Hampshire doesn't have: a sales tax — the equipment carries no tax at all, a real saving next to neighbouring states. Property-tax relief exists under RSA 72:61-72, but each municipality chooses whether to adopt the exemption, so ask your town rather than assume. Systems up to 100 kW can also register for Class II renewable-energy certificates, though REC prices are modest and the paperwork often isn't worth it for a single house. The former state residential rebate has been wound down.
