Who supplies your power in Minnesota

Minnesota's grid is a mix of investor-owned utilities, municipals and co-ops. Xcel Energy (Northern States Power) is by far the largest, serving the Twin Cities and much of the populated south and east. Minnesota Power (ALLETE) covers the north-east, and Otter Tail Power the west. Beyond those three you have roughly 125 municipal utilities and around 45 rural electric cooperatives — many served through wholesaler Great River Energy, plus large co-ops like Dakota Electric and Connexus Energy. State net-metering law sets a common floor, but incentives and interconnection details vary a lot between Xcel and the smaller munis and co-ops, so confirm terms with your specific provider before signing.

What you’re paid for what you export

State law sets the deal in Minnesota, and for home-sized systems it's genuinely good: utilities must net meter systems up to 40 kW at the full retail rate, so the roughly 16 cents you pay is also roughly what an exported kilowatt-hour earns you. Credits carry forward month to month against later consumption. The seam to watch is the annual true-up — some utilities pay out whatever net excess remains at the lower avoided-cost (wholesale) rate, others roll it forward as a credit — which is why the sensible play is an array matched to your annual usage rather than one built to overproduce, since generation beyond your own load earns the lesser rate. For a residential system, this arrangement is the single biggest reason solar still pencils out this far north.

Minnesota incentives & taxes in 2026

Minnesota's stack is modest but real. Solar equipment escapes the state sales tax, and the value it adds to your home is exempt from property tax, so your assessment stays put. The headline programme is Xcel's Solar*Rewards, a per-kilowatt-hour production incentive paid over a set number of years — worth chasing if you're an Xcel customer, but it's capacity-limited, budgeted annually and often waitlisted, so build your case without it and let it be a pleasant surprise. A few co-ops and munis run small rebates of their own. Solar*Rewards rates and caps shift year to year, so check the current figures before counting on a number.

What solar costs in Minnesota

Around $17,000-$20,000 buys a typical 6 kW array here, at $2.90 to $3.30 a watt — smaller systems and rural sites toward the top of the band, and nothing unusual by national standards. The catch is output, not price: snow cover and northern latitude hold production to about 1,300 kWh per installed kW a year, so matching a Sun Belt home's generation takes a somewhat bigger array. Quote spreads are wide enough that three bids is a minimum, not a nicety.

The honest verdict for Minnesota

Minnesota sits squarely in the middle — neither an obvious yes nor a waste of money. One-for-one metering and the twin tax exemptions do real work, and at around 16 cents/kWh a well-sized 6 kW system typically repays itself in 12–14 years, with panels warrantied to keep producing long after that. Land an Xcel Solar*Rewards slot and the timeline shortens meaningfully. The honest read: decent metering and utility rebates carry the case despite the latitude, but it's close enough that your own usage pattern and your actual quotes decide it — run the numbers before you commit.
