Who supplies your power in Iowa
Iowa's two investor-owned utilities — MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy (operating locally as Interstate Power and Light, or IPL) — serve most of the state's homes and set the net-metering terms that matter most for rooftop solar. Beyond them, Iowa has a large network of rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities, such as Cedar Falls Utilities and the municipal electric systems in towns like Ames and Muscatine. These co-ops and munis are not bound by the statewide net-metering rules and each set their own buy-back terms, which are often less generous. What you’re paid for what you export
MidAmerican and Alliant customers still get the good deal: exports earn the same retail rate you pay, and unused credits roll forward month after month instead of being zeroed out, so the grid behaves close to a one-for-one battery for your surplus daytime generation. One caveat worth knowing about — Iowa has been moving towards a future 'value of solar' export tariff, so newer systems could eventually end up on a different, less favourable structure; most existing net-metering customers are grandfathered on the generous terms for a set period. On a rural co-operative or a municipal utility the export rate is set locally and may sit well below retail, so pin down the specifics first.
Iowa incentives & taxes in 2026
Iowa's Solar Energy System Tax Credit was once a meaningful sweetener; it has since closed to new residential applications and does nothing for a new install. What remains is mainly a property-tax exemption, so the value your array adds to the home isn't taxed for a defined period, plus favourable sales-tax treatment on some solar equipment. There's no active SREC market in Iowa, so no tradable certificates to sell. It's a thinner picture than the state used to offer.

What solar costs in Iowa

The honest verdict for Iowa
Iowa sits in the middle of the pack in 2026. Cheap power — about 13.9 cents/kWh — stretches payback out, and solid production of roughly 1,300 kWh per kW a year only partly claws that back. The genuine strength is retail-rate net metering, which keeps every kilowatt-hour worth full value whether you use it or export it. But with both the federal credit and the state tax credit off the table, nothing much accelerates the timeline: a cash purchase takes 12 to 15 years or so to repay itself. It's a sound buy if energy independence and a hedge against rising rates matter to you more than a quick return.
